John F. [Franklin] Pinkham (1825-1905) was the last Santa Cruz alcalde in early 1850, during the period when most men had left town for the gold fields, and before establishment of Santa Cruz County did away with the Mexican-era office. Rowland credited him with building the "Bret Harte Honeymoon Cottage" on Church Street, in the 1850s. Franklin's grave marker in Colma credits him with membership in the Society of California Pioneers, but he did not join the Santa Cruz chapter.
