Samuel Richardson Hillman was listed and shown as "S. Hillman", owner of a "furniture store" in Block 3 of the 1866 Santa Cruz map, on Mission Street across from the southeast corner of the plaza. According to Rowland (Santa Cruz: The Early Years, p.151), Hillman was a cabinet maker. His lot was bought by the school district with the money derived from the sale of the property of London Nelson, which he willed to the schools. The Hillman lot was added to the adjacent Mission Hill School property.
