Jonathan H. [Harwood] Guild (1814-1870), a native of Connecticut, came to California during the Gold Rush and to Santa Cruz in the 1850s. In the 1860s, the family lived on upper Locust Street, and donated land on that street for the first Baptist church (noted in Elliott, p.69). The church building was later moved down the hill to Walnut Avenue.
