Grant School was built on Grant Street (where Grant Park is now) ca. 1863-65. A purpose-built schoolhouse was constructed in 1881, and a larger school in 1914—designed by local architect Lee D. Esty in a Mission Revival style. The last classes were in 1966 and, after serving as the temporary main library when the current library began construction that year, the school site became a city park in 1971. The 14,000 square foot building was burned down for a firefighter-training exercise.
