William T. Cope was a Santa Cruz retailer who formed a hardware store partnership with Jesse Cope in 1877. In 1877 he married Katherine Hihn, and father-in-law F. A. Hihn built a house on Walnut Avenue for the couple as a wedding gift. In 1894, Cope had the Lincoln Street rowhouse constructed (see the SWC4 cover for a photo of the rowhouse).
