Chesnutwood's Business College was established in Santa Cruz in 1884 by J. A. Chesnutwood, located in F. A. Hihn's Alta Building on Pacific Avenue. A year later the school moved to larger quarters in a new Hihn building next door. Chesnutwood's merged with Heald's Business College in 1906, under which name it continues today.

Wilber M. Gardner came from Illinois in 1883 to teach shorthand and typing.
