John D. Chace (1829-1890) was a native of New York. In 1866 he was co-proprietor of the Washington Market (primarily selling meat) on Pacific Avenue, as seen in theSentinel ad at right. The market was acquired in 1862 by A. L. Rountree, maybe with Chace, although ads listing them as partners didn't appear until 1866. By 1878, ads listed Chace as sole proprietor.

Also in 1866, Chace was listed as one of the "Managers" for a Thanksgiving Ball, along with many other downtown notables.
