The current main Santa Cruz County jail, on Water Street, was built in 1981. The previous jail, built in 1936 on Front Street, is now part of the McPherson Center that also houses the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH). A previous jail in that location was built in 1890. The first county jail was a small wooden structure built on Mission Hill in the 1850s, behind the first courthouse. After a fire, A stone jail was built nearby in 1864.
