Bookshop Santa Cruz is the oldest and last surviving downtown bookseller. Prior to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, Bookshop was in the 1899 Williamson & Garrett building at 1547 Pacific Avenue. That building was demolished after the earthquake and, after over a year in the "Phoenix Pavilions", the shop moved into the St. George Hotel (also demolished post-earthquake) replacement building across Pacific Avenue, where it remains as of 2024.
