Alfred Baldwin (1816-1904), a native of New York, first came to California in 1846, in company with Richard Kirby. Later that year, Baldwin joined the California Battalion, and first came to Santa Cruz in 1847. He prospected for gold in 1848, and settled in Santa Cruz in 1849. Right after the Pacific Ocean House hotel opened in 1866, Baldwin built a similar two-story brick building on his lot next door. The building remains today at 1545 Pacific Ave. He was shown as a property owner (as "A. Baldwin, store") on the 1866 Santa Cruz map, in "Block No. 4".
