Francisco "Frank" Alzina (1821-1887), a native of Spain, was the first Santa Cruz County sheriff. He was listed as a property owner in Block 2 of the 1866 Santa Cruz map. On that property, next door to his Gonzales in-laws on the mission plaza, Frank built what survives as the oldest frame residence in Santa Cruz. In 1866, Alzina's property extended to the corner of Mission Street, but was later split, and another house was built on the corner lot (partly visible at left in the photo). Frank's son Enoch also became sheriff.
