Chuck and Esther Abbott were driving forces behind the creation of the Pacific Garden Mall in the late 1960s. Abbott Square behind the Santa Cruz Art & History Museum was named for them. The Chuck and Esther Abbott Slide Collection of color slides, which includes many views along Pacific Avenue shortly before and after completion of the Garden Mall in 1969, are accessible at UCSC Digital Collections.
