The 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused significant damage to structures in Santa Cruz, including:
- Mission Hill School, The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture (4th ed. 2023), Chapter Five, p.82.
- Deborah Muth, Santa Cruz Through Time, a 2019 book, [includes a photo of Mission Hill School after removal of the 3rd story].
- 1894 County courthouse, The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture (4th ed. 2023), Chapter Five, p.156.
Heavy damage in San Francisco from the earthquake and subsequent fire caused a boom in the export of building materials from Santa Cruz County, especially Bituminous rock and lumber.
