The Venetian Water Carnival was an event created in 1895 to entertain summer visitors to Santa Cruz. Staged on the wide tidal section near the mouth of the San Lorenzo River, the extravaganza was intended to become an annual affair, but never became firmly established. The last Carnival was in 1927.
