The 1853 U.S. Coast Survey Map is the earliest graphical image we have of the Santa Cruz area. A version published in 1854 shows just the Santa Cruz area, and is available for (download here). The map shows locations of streets and structures (but with very little identifying text). The basic shape and main streets of Santa Cruz were already established at that time. An annotated version of the map received a few updates (mostly in red ink), but the newest structures shown appear to be the 1855 Gharky wharf and the 1856 Davis & Jordan wharf. The 1867 lighthouse was not added. At right is a detail from the annotated map, showing the added wharves and topo contour lines.
