Georgiana Bruce Kirby followed her friend Eliza Farnham to Santa Cruz in 1850, and married tanner Richard Kirby in 1852. Georgiana became a well-known feminist writer and advocate for women's suffrage. A local private school was named for her (now shortened to "Kirby School".
