Spring-fed Pogonip Creek, arises in the hills north of downtown Santa Cruz, in what is now the city's Pogonip Open Space. The creek flows east-southeast to the San Lorenzo River through the Harvey West neighborhood. The last documented rancheria (native tribal settlement) in Santa Cruz was around Pogonip Creek. Water from the creek was used by the tanneries established in the area (SWC Chapter Six, entry #4).
