Santa Cruz: The Early Years was a compilation of several earlier books written by Leon Rowland, and was published in 1980, with a signed introduction by Sandy Lydon . Much of the writing in the books was compiled from Rowland's "Circuit Rider" columns in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The collected books were:
- 1940 - The Story of Old Soquel
- 1941 - Old Santa Cruz Mission
- 1941 - Villa de Branciforte
- 1947 - Annals of Santa Cruz
The family index titled "Los Fundadores" (1951) was borrowed, with permission, from another source.
