Arthur W. Bryant (1858-1919. Harrison p357), born in Maine, came to Santa Cruz County in 1882 as a schoolteacher. After a year as a district superintendent in Soquel, and another year filling the same position in Corralitos, Bryant left teaching and bought the grocery business of C. Hicks. He later took on partners, including Frank Mattison (Bryant & Mattison) and a Mr. Collins (Collins & Bryant), who was (according to Harrison) also his father-in-law.

Bryant and wife are buried in Mountain View, but Find-a-Grave has no info on her parents, or a maiden name. Harrison gives her father's initials as "E. M.", while the Sentinel notice has "C. M."
