Benjamin A. [Allen] Case (1798-1871), described by Rowland as a "Connecticut Yankee", came to Santa Cruz in 1848. Wife Mary is credited with being the first Santa Cruz school teacher. In 1866, the Case family lived in a house on a large parcel on the west side of Neary Lagoon but, according to Rowland, lost their wealth in an 1869 Los Angeles hotel investment. Case died in Mendocino County two years later, and Mary returned to Santa Cruz, where she lived with son Rollin until her death in 1889.

Rollin was a Soc. of Pioneers member.
